·         Charles Lamb was the seventh and youngest child o John and Elizabeth Lamb.
·         He was born in Temple on 10th February 1775.

·         He spent seven years at there, where he got the friendship of Coleridge.

·         He was appointed as the Accounts office’s clerk in the East India Company in the year 1792, he continued his service till the year 1825.
·         His intimate friend was James White, author of “Letter of Sir John Falstaff”.
·         South Sea House is the first essay published in London magazine in the name of Elia.
·         The South Sea House is a great commercial and financial undertaking .
·         The South Sea Company was established by Earl of Oxford in 1710.
·         South sea House had trade monopoly with South Sea merchants.
·         Buying shares is known as The South Sea House.
·         They bought shares at 6% interest.
·         Within ten years the shares were quoted 5 time.
·         This development has called South Sea Bubble.
·         The Bubble was in 1720.
·         The government terminated monopoly in 1807.
·         The company was liquidated in 1853.
·         The essay is a description of the company and clerks.
·         After leaving Christ’s Hospital in 1789, at the age of fourteen, Lamb obtained a clerkship in the old South Sea House, where his elder brother, John was already employed.
·         Lamb remained there till 1792 when he obtained a post in the accountants office of the East India Company in Leaden Hall Street.

·         He buys up litigations of others.
·         Hepworth is the serious clerk.
·         He is associated with scientist Newton.
·         King Midas was a foolish king of Phrygia whose touch turned everything into gold.
